Oklahoma Wheat Harvest for 2024 Season Begins in Southwest Oklahoma

By: The Oklahoma Wheat Commission

Oklahoma wheat harvest has started in multiple locations in Southwest, Oklahoma over the weekend, with the wheat being 10 days ahead of normal schedule.   It has been reported that over 100,000 bushels was received between locations at Grandfield and Devol.  Trucks have also been received at Frederick. Early cutting has also started around Temple, Walters and Chattanooga. Test cutting has taken place around Altus with some producers hoping to start this afternoon.

Early reports in all locations show test weights ranging from 60 to 63 lbs. per bushel. (The wheat reported at 60 lbs. per bushel was at a higher moisture level, so producers are hopeful as moisture goes down test weights will still go up.)

Proteins ranging from 11.1% to 12.5% with more of the proteins on early cuttings being reported in the 11.9% to 12.5% range. Early yields being reported at 40 to 45 bushels per acre.  Higher yields are predicted on intensively managed wheat.  Keep in mind this region has been considered the bright spot of the state for growing conditions this year. The state has received a large amount of hail damage in South Central, Oklahoma last night with large amounts of hail damage in other regions of Southwest Oklahoma and Northern Oklahoma over the past two weeks.  A more comprehensive report will be published on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Moves into Final Stages for Most Regions

Oklahoma Harvest Report by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission

The Oklahoma Wheat Harvest is wrapping up in most locations across the state with the exception of some locations in North Central Oklahoma, East of Enid on the 412 Hwy corridor, and areas along the I-35 corridor around Tonkawa/Ponca City/Blackwell and Braman.  Harvest is also just getting a good start on the irrigated wheat in the Panhandle regions. Not much dryland wheat will be harvested in the Panhandle, and in many areas producers will be harvesting for seed wheat with very little going to the elevators.  It is thought some elevator locations will take in 25% of what is generally taken within a normal year. Other locations where irrigation is not utilized, might be fortunate to take in 5% of what they would in a normal year.   Harvest is considered completed in most all other regions with a few minor exceptions of producers needing to get some fields out. The rain has continued to hinder producers in several of those locations and it will remain to be seen if producers will try to finish cutting if the rains continue through this weekend in Central and Northern Oklahoma.  (Test weight and quality has held up for the most part with not much sprout damage being reported; however producers have been fighting with mud and terrible weed issues.  Some are utilizing harvest aides, but if the rain continues it is thought several acres will be abandoned because the quality with yields will make the remainder of the crop not salvageable.)

This will be the final harvest report published by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission for the 2023 season. A regional publication provided by Plains Grains Inc. will follow harvest as it progresses into the Dakotas and Montana and will be published on a weekly basis at the end of each week.

Below you can see the remaining reports from locations across the state.

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Continues in All Locations this Week

Oklahoma Harvest Report by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission

The Oklahoma Wheat Harvest made greater progress in areas over the weekend, even with continued rains in multiple regions throughout this past week.

Harvest in Southwest and South Central, Oklahoma is wrapped up for the most part although producers are still cutting in regions where they have been fighting rains. Harvest in Southwest, Oklahoma is 95% complete.   In Central Oklahoma greater progress was made in most areas over the weekend. The OWC is now calling that region 60% complete in most places.   In parts of Northwest Oklahoma, up by Burlington and Alva, harvest is 80% complete. As you move into North Central regions along the Hwy 81 corridor east up along I-35 around Tonkawa,  Ponca City, Blackwell and Braman, that area is 35% complete.   In Northeast Oklahoma in the Afton and  Miami regions, that area is 85% to 95% complete depending on location.

In the Panhandle regions producers have been fighting untimely rains for wheat harvest in many places.  No dryland wheat or irrigated wheat is being reported as being harvest in the Balko region.   One field of irrigated wheat has been reported as being harvested south of Hooker and was making 55 bushels per acre on early cuttings, but no irrigated wheat has been reported as being taken in at elevators within that region.   Some samples have been received on irrigated wheat at Hooker this morning and they were 17% moisture, so producers were hoping to get into the fields today.  (No dryland wheat will be harvested in this region most likely.)

In Southern Oklahoma test weights at most locations have fallen a bit now ranging mostly at a 59 lbs. per bushel average for that region.  In Central Oklahoma test weights are not as high ranging from 56 to 61 lbs. per bushel, but most coming in at 57 lbs. to 59 lbs. per bushel. Early reports from Northern Oklahoma across the state have test weights ranging from 60-62 lbs. per bushel, with a few lower test weights being reported at 58 lbs. per bushel.  Quality has still been holding up on wheat in this area as the rains have not as impacted it as much as Central, Oklahoma.

In Northeast Oklahoma, the quality on both Hard Red Winter and Soft Red Winter wheat has been extremely favorable.  Test weight coming in at 61 to 63 lbs. with yields on Hard Red Winter wheat being reported at 50 bushels per acre and on Soft Red Winter wheat being reported at 85 to over 100 bushels per acre in some instances.

Yields on wheat being taken in as harvest progresses in Southern Oklahoma are still favorable at this point, as the majority of the crop is now harvested in this region.  Most are reporting 30 to 40 bushel per acre yields in Southern Oklahoma.  In Central Oklahoma the yields are ranging from the low 20’s to mid 30’s, with some higher yields in the mid to high 40’s depending on location. Yields being reported in Northern Oklahoma locations from elevator managers as most locations are just getting good starts have many locations calling for a 35 bushel per acre average, with a few management intensive producers mentioning some higher yields, but those instances are rare. Protein has been ranging from 10.5% to 14.5% in most all locations with stronger proteins overall.  State average as of today for protein is being figured at 13.2%.  The Oklahoma Wheat Commission is calling harvest 57% complete.

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Makes Minor Progress Statewide this Week

Oklahoma Harvest Report by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission

The Oklahoma Wheat Harvest made slight progress in Northern Oklahoma over the past couple days, and many areas in Southern and Central Oklahoma have been dealing with mud and rain in several locations late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. As of this morning, heavy showers were moving across Northern and Central Oklahoma, in several places. Harvest in most parts of Northern Oklahoma, until the rains this morning is 20% to 30% completed depending on location. Some harvest is being reported on early cuttings of irrigated wheat in the Panhandle, but a lot of the wheat in this region is still green, and producers are hopeful to get a good start early or the middle of next week. (A large amount of the dryland wheat in the Panhandle has been terminated and will not be harvested due to the severe drought, and a lot of irrigated wheat has been laid down for hay.) In Southern Oklahoma test weights at most locations have fallen a bit now ranging mostly at 60 lbs. per bushel average for that region. In Central and West Central regions, test weights are ranging from 55-60 lbs. per bushel. (The average in that Central and West Central region is still holding on in that 58 to 59 lbs. per bushel range) but if rains continue it is predicted that might change. Early reports from Northern Oklahoma across the state have test weights ranging from 60-62 lbs. per bushel, with a few lower test weights being reported at 58 lbs. per bushel. This is on reports of wheat before the rains coming through Northern Oklahoma today.
Yields on wheat being taken in as harvest progresses in Southern Oklahoma still favorable at this point, as the majority of the crop is now harvested in this region. Most are reporting 30 to 40 bushel per acre yields in Southern Oklahoma. In Central Oklahoma the yields are ranging from the low 20’s to mid 30’s, with some higher yields in the mid to high 40’s depending on location. Yields being reported in Northern Oklahoma locations from elevator managers, as most locations are just getting good starts, have many locations calling for a 35 bushel per acre average, with a few management intensive producers mentioning some higher yields, but those instances are rare. Protein has been ranging from 10.5% to 14.5% in most all locations with stronger proteins overall. State average as of today for protein is being figured at 12.8%. The Oklahoma Wheat Commission is calling harvest 45% complete.

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Makes Some Progress with Continued Start and Stop Pattern Due to Widespread Rains

Oklahoma Harvest Report by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission

Oklahoma Wheat harvest made slight progress this week as producers were in fields off and on again as rains came late last week and over the weekend. Harvest is still taking place from the Oklahoma/Texas line to the Oklahoma/ Kansas line, but heavy rains in parts of Southwest Oklahoma as well as in Central and Northern Oklahoma had everyone at a standstill yesterday, with hopes that producers will be back in the fields by this afternoon or late tomorrow depending on location. Harvest is just getting a good start in Northern Oklahoma from 81 HWY east to the I-35 corridor we are calling that region now 15% harvested. As you go further into Northwest Oklahoma around Cherokee and Alva they are calling harvest 5 to 10% complete. Shattuck just received a few loads over the weekend and no harvest is being reported in the Panhandle regions, out by Guymon or Hooker as of today. It is thought some dryland harvest might begin the end of this week in the Panhandle but the wheat in that region is further behind. (A large amount of the dryland wheat in the Panhandle has been terminated and will not be harvested due to the severe drought, and a lot of irrigated wheat has been laid down for hay.) Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Continues in Southern Oklahoma Amidst Scattered Rains Across the State

Oklahoma Harvest Report by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission

Oklahoma Wheat harvest continues in Southern Oklahoma, as light rains have scattered across the state in several places since Monday afternoon.  Some places have received 2/100ths while others have received over 1 ½ inches depending on location. (It has been reported some places in Southwest Oklahoma might have received 1 and 3/10ths of moisture and on the other side of a town or county no rain was received at all.)  Despite the rain, several locations in Southern Oklahoma are still reporting good quality wheat on what is being taken in.  Heavier rains have brought test weights down some.   Most locations are still reporting averages to be 60 lbs. per bushel or higher.  Several locations down in South Central Oklahoma are reporting ranges still from 61-65 lbs. per bushel.

Moisture has been ranging from 11.5-13%. Yields on wheat being taken in as harvest progresses has been favorable to this point.  Most are reporting 30 to 40 bushels per acre depending on the location. (Several instances of 50 bushel wheat being reported where timely rains were received.)  Some high management intensive producers in rare instances have reported yields in the mid 70’s to low 80’s.  (Keep in mind the reporting on the yield is still mainly being reported on the region in the state that is predicted to a have the best wheat.)  Elevator managers have some concerns as harvest progresses further North that the test weight and quality will not be as favorable since we continue to receive larger amounts of moisture in these regions. Protein averages are being reported in a wide range from 10.5% to 13.5% depending on location.  Some have reported protein to be as high as 15.5% on few select fields.  Average for all areas being reported is 11.5% to 12.5%

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Progresses in Southern Oklahoma

Oklahoma Harvest Report by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission

Oklahoma wheat harvest has moved steadily in most regions of Southern Oklahoma this past week. Rains have hindered progress in other parts of the South Central and Western regions.  The rains in Central and Northern Oklahoma this past week along with the high humidity continue to delay ripening in those places. Test weights for the most part remain favorable on what is being taken in, although some areas are reporting lower test weights where the crop has been more stressed. Several locations are reporting 60-64 lbs. per bushel. Some lower test weights are being reported in the mid to high 50’s but overall the state average is still coming in between 60-61 lbs. per bushel.

Moisture has been ranging from 12-13%, with most wheat being taken in at around 12.5%.  Early yields reported in Southern Oklahoma are ranging from the low 20’s to the mid 50’s depending on location and management practices. Some intensive management producers in rare instances have reported yields in the mid 70’s to low 80’s. (Keep in mind this is in an area that received timely moisture in the Grandfield-Devol region. This area is predicted to have the best overall crop conditions for Oklahoma this year.) Protein averages are being reported in a wide range from 10.5% to 12.5% depending on location.  Some have reported protein to be as high as 15.5% on a few select fields.

The Oklahoma Wheat Commission is calling Oklahoma wheat harvest 15% complete.

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest At 95% Complete

Courtesy Oklahoma Wheat Commission

Oklahoma Wheat harvest is wrapping up in the Northern and Panhandle regions of the state. Harvest has been hindered in spots due to rain showers over the past 5 days in the Panhandle, Northwest and North Central Oklahoma.  Rain showers this afternoon across the Panhandle and Northern Oklahoma will slow progress of completion.  (Note: Quality of the crop has not changed on what was previously reported from last week.) Sprout damage being reported in the state from regions hit by heavy rains is accounting for approximately 5 to 10% of the crop.  It is important to note much of the crop that has sprout damage is also reporting minimal numbers in that 5 to 7% range.  When looking at the averages for blending purposes it seems sprout is not going to be as big an issue as previously thought.  Proteins across the state are favorable with averages coming in between 12 to 13% in most places.  Yields are ranging all over the board from the low teens to mid-20’s in Southwest, Oklahoma. In South Central Oklahoma, yields being reported from 10 bushels per acre to the mid 30’s. Yields in central and Northern Oklahoma are being reported as higher ranging from 15 bushels per acre to as high as 65 bushels per acre.  In the Northern tier of the state where yields are better, regions are still looking at averages in the high 20’s to mid-30’s.  It is also important to note several areas in Northwest Oklahoma up by Cherokee and Burlington had severe drought and large portions of that region will not be harvested, which will also have major impact on statewide bushels that are taken in.  Test weight average in Southern and Central Oklahoma will be 58 pounds per bushel.  Test weight averages in Northern Oklahoma and in the Panhandle will be higher falling in the 59 pound to 61 pound per bushel range depending on location.  The Oklahoma Wheat Commission is now calling Oklahoma wheat harvest 95% complete. Due to lack of harvest taking place on the minimal amount left to harvest with the rains this week and the 4th of July holiday a final harvest report from the Oklahoma Wheat Commission will be published on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.
